Muzhappilangad Beach is the longest drive-in beach of Asia and the only one in the state of Kerala in southern India. The beach is a popular tourist attraction for locals, yet, not many foreigners are making their way there yet. I went to Muzhappilangad Beach on my trip through Kerala and it was an interesting experience. In this blog post, I will tell you if it’s worth visiting Muzhappilangad Beach – and give you some tips along the way.

What is Muzhappilangad Beach?

As I already mentioned, Muzhappilangad Beach is the longest drive-in beach in Asia, with a total length of 5,5 kilometers. It goes parallel to National Highway 66 and connects the two cities of Kannur and Thalassery.

Muzhappilangad Beach is a popular local tourist attraction and was featured several times as one of the most beautiful drive-in beaches in the world. In total, it is allowed to drive on around 4 kilometers if you are a visitor.

Along the drive-in beach of Muzhappilangad, you can also find local vendors, restaurants, and people swimming in the water.

How to get to Muzhappilangad Beach?

Muzhappilangad Beach is accessible quite easily, and you actually have different options:

By air: The nearest airport is Kannur International Airport (~ 25 kilometers away), from where you can take a cab/bus or rent a car. It is also possible to fly into bigger cities of Kerala such as Kochi and start your journey from there. To find the cheapest flights, I recommend using Skyscanner to find the best deals.

By train: There are 3 train stations nearby, from which you can reach Muzhappilangad Beach. Edakkad (~2 kilometers), Thalassery (~7 kilometers) and Kannur (~ 15 kilometers). From there, you can proceed with local transportation, taxis or rickshaws.

By car: Of course, you can also visit Muzhappilangad Beach in your own car, which is probably the best experience. In total there are 5 different access points between Kannur and Thalassery to get to the drive-in beach.

Is it worth visiting Muzhappilangad Beach?

Now let’s come to the question I promised to answer you! Is it worth visiting Muzhappilangad Beach? In my opinion, yes! If you are exploring the state of Kerala already or are nearby, it is definitely a cool experience – as a drive-in beach is quite an unusual and fun experience.

But what other things to do in Muzhappilangad Beach are there? Well, while driving on it is the obvious choice, I’ve actually enjoyed getting out of the car and have a quick swim, as the water was surprisingly pleasant (although super warm). Additionally, I got some chai (tea) from a local vendor and also talked with some locals.

If you want, it is possible to hire a rickshaw driver once you arrive and have a little rid along the beach. Other than that, it is a beach like any other, just with actual traffic on it (and I’m serious, you have to be careful when crossing the “road”).

Therefore, I think Muzhappilangad Beach is a really cool spot to check out, however, I would not travel from far away just to see it.
