Things to do in Interlaken in summer

Harder Kulm

One of the greatest things to do in Interlaken in Summer is to visit the Harder Kulm. The “Top of Interlaken” can be reached easily from the city center, where you can find the modern funicular. The funicular will take you up to over 1’300 meters – where you can enjoy a perfect view over Interlaken, lake Brienz & Thun and lastly, the Swiss Alps. If you want to save the money for the funicular, it is also possible to hike up to the viewpoint, which takes around 1 to 1,5 hours.

Whichever way you choose, I usually suggest to get up for sunrise or sunset, as the views will get even more spectacular. On the top, you will also find a panorama restaurant, where you could have lunch or dinner.

Information: Harder Kulm is closed during winter!

Canyon Swing

Everybody knows bungee jumping or paragliding (we will come to that later!) – but what about jumping into a canyon and reaching speeds around 120km/h? Sounds crazy? And it certainly is – but also so much fun. The Canyon Swing is offered by Outdoor Interlaken, and I had the chance to try it out – and everybody that wants to get some adrenaline should definitely go for it!

They will also create a custom video for you, which is super fun. You can check it out below to get some more impressions!

Jungfraujoch

The Jungfraujoch is probably the biggest tourist attraction around Interlaken, if not Switzerland. The “Top of Europe” is a true spectacle and something you can’t see everywhere. If you are traveling on a budget, this will not be your favorite place, as the costs to get to the top are extremely high, however, the money is well spent if you have the budget for it.

The Jungfraujoch is located 3466 meters above sea level – which is absolutely insane. You are surrounded by glaciers, some of the highest mountains of the Alps and beautiful views. When talking about the best things to do in Interlaken, it just has to be on the list.

You can buy your tickets beforehand online or buy them once you are there. I recommend making your reservations in advance, especially when traveling there in Summer, as the trains can be extremely crowded.

White Water Rafting

As Interlaken is located in the middle of dozens of mountains and two lakes there are also many opportunities for you to try out White Water Rafting – which is a famous activity done by both tourists and Swiss people in the area around Interlaken. In my opinion, Wild Water Rafting is one of the things to do in Interlaken in Summer – as the temperatures will be much more comfortable than during cold months. And believe me, the water is also freaking cold during summer! 😉

Lauterbrunnen

Let’s talk about one of my favorite places in whole Switzerland: Lauterbrunnen. This beautiful place, located in a surreal valley with over 70 waterfalls already inspired famous writers like J.R Tolkien – and I can totally relate with them. The place is absolutely magic and offers incredible views, that are hard to find anywhere else.

I personally love to just walk around Lauterbrunnen, take some pictures, and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. That’s free and absolutely wonderful. You can also visit the Trümmelbach falls, which are a nice attraction in Lauterbrunnen itself.

Wengen

Once you made it to Wengen, I highly suggest to also visit Wengen, which s a short train ride away. You will get up to the small town of Wengen, from where you can enjoy the best views over the Lauterbrunnen valley – and believe me, it’s absolutely stunning. From Wengen you can also reach the Jungfraujoch and/or Grindelwald by train.

Paragliding

Whenever you walk around the old town of Interlaken, you will see people that land after their tandem paragliding experience – and you will see them with a big smile. Imagine the beautiful views seen from a bird’s view – and that’s exactly what you can do if you decide to try out paragliding in Interlaken.

Paragliding is one of these activities that are (in my opinion) just more fun during summer time – as you are not freezing and can purely enjoy the magical views while flying – just as I did it in Interlaken or Fethiye (Turkey).

Boat tours

Interlaken has a perfect location to take a boat ride, and it’s therefore simply one of the things to do in Interlaken, especially with perfect summer weather. Simply head to one of the two crystal clear lakes (Thun or Brienz) and take a roundtrip around the lake – including magnificent views and a fresh breeze.

Schilthorn

Do you want to feel like James Bond in one of his movies? Then the Schilthorn is the perfect location for you: It was home to a James Bond movie (On Her Majesty’s Secret Service) and the Schilthorn remained the Bond theme throughout the year, including a museum.

If you decide to go to the Schilthorn you will not only feel like Bond but also witness some of the craziest views in whole Switzerland. One of the highlights is the panorama restaurant, which is rotating while you are eating. Like this, you can enjoy a 360 degrees panorama view while having some food.

To get there, you simply take a train from Interlaken to Lauterbrunnen, from where you can take a bus to the first station of the cable car – which will bring you on top of the Schilthorn in around 30 minutes.

Helicopter ride

One of the most exclusive and fun things to do in Interlaken is taking a helicopter ride around the Swiss Alps – and in my opinion, it is one of the best things I ever did in my life. During my helicopter ride, I enjoyed fantastic views over the Swiss Alps which are otherwise impossible to see – and even landed on a glacier.

A helicopter flight is not cheap – but an adventure that you will never forget.

Day trip to Lucerne

Lucerne is another beautiful city in Switzerland, and easily reachable from Interlaken. Extremely beautiful is the train ride that connects Interlaken with Lucerne (panorama train) – which is already worth the trip. If you are staying in Interlaken for more than a few days, it might be a great option to do a day trip to Lucerne, where you can visit other beautiful mountains or the old town of Lucerne.

Schynige Platte

You don’t have enough of mountains yet? The Schynige Platte is another beautiful place that you can easily reach from Interlaken – this time with an old but historic train – which makes the journey even more adorable.

The Schynige Platte is an amazing place to hike, slow down and just enjoy the traditions of Switzerland. The Schynige Platte is certainly one of the best things to do in Interlaken in Summer, and you shouldn’t miss it when staying in Interlaken.

Swimming

As I already mentioned: Interlaken is located between two beautiful lakes – that will offer you a perfect refreshment during hot summer days. The water is clear and absolutely safe – so you can just hop in and enjoy it.

Some locals also swim in the river that goes through Interlaken. They jump in and go out after some hundred meters of floating with the river. But be careful: This is not recommended if you are not an experienced swimmer.

Hotels in Interlaken

First of all: Interlaken is not cheap – if you want to stay in a nice location and a great hotel you will have to pay a price for it. However, the region itself is so beautiful that it’s worth to spend the money in my opinion. Here are some selected Hotels in Interlaken for you:

5* Lindner Grand Hotel Beau Rivage

5-star hotel with a perfect location, directly in the city center, next to the beautiful Aare river and nearby the train station. I stayed there for 2 nights and was amazed by the location, the rooms, and the buffet selection.

4* Hapimag Resort Interlaken

Another fantastic hotel in Interlaken – with a great location and amazing ratings.

Interlaken Youth Hostel

Budget option, located close to the train station. Offers bed in dorms but also private rooms. If you are looking for a great value for your money, this is a valid option for you.
